š¼ Winter Pansies: small-flowered or large-flowered?
When the garden is heading towards winter and many plants lose their leaves, there are fortunately varieties that provide color at that very time.
Winter pansies are a perfect example of this. In our nursery, we sell both small-flowered and large-flowered winter pansies ā both strong, atmospheric, and suitable for the colder months. We are happy to explain the differences.
š± What makes winter pansies so suitable for the cold season?
Winter pansies are specially selected to perform well in low temperatures, wind, and changeable weather.
If you plant them in the autumn, they will bloom from October until spring, often without significant decline. This makes them ideal for keeping borders, pots, and balcony boxes attractive even in winter.
š¼ Small-flowered winter pansies ā strong and reliable
Characteristics
- Flowers of 2ā3 cm
- Compact growth
- Very weather-resistant
- Abundant and long-lasting bloom
Small-flowered winter pansies are known for their excellent winter hardiness. The smaller flowers can withstand a lot of rain and wind and therefore remain beautiful for longer. They form an even, colorful planting that remains attractive throughout the winter.
Suitable for:
- Pots and balcony boxes
- Group planting
- Combinations with, for example, ornamental grass or Jasmine
šŗ Large-flowered winter pansies ā striking and versatile
Characteristics
- Flowers of 4ā8 cm
- Slightly fuller plant appearance
- Very wide choice of colors
Large-flowered winter pansies are ideal if you are looking for striking flowers that immediately create an atmosphere. They perform well in winter, although prolonged wet periods can temporarily affect flower quality. As soon as it gets drier, they recover quickly.
Suitable for:
- Eye-catchers in pots
- Seasonal arrangements
- Gardens where a larger flower is desired

- Planting period: September to November
